Pre- Conference Workshops

New Databases for Health Economists  ($40/$50 member/nonmember rate)

Sunday, June 7 3:15pm-5:15pm

As our healthcare world is always evolving, health economists can have a greater impact when new databases become available for their use. Please come to this session to hear about several new sources of data that you might not know about. These include : (1) Cerner’s Data that includes Electronic Health record information and has other databases attached to it such as hospital data from the American Hospital Association, (2) The Fair Health Claims database that includes all claims from a large number of Private Health Insurers from across our country, (3) The Veteran’s Administration Dataset from their VA Health Economics Resource Center, and The Massachusetts All-Payer Claims Database. The speakers will explain not only the contents and variables included in all of the databases, but also how to acquire these datasets.

Advances in Econometrics: Emerging Topics in Causal Inference and Machine Learning ($40/$50 member/nonmember rate)

Sunday, June 7 3:15pm-5:15pm

This workshop will expose participants to important recent advances in causal inference (CI) methods and machine learning (ML) methods that are of particular relevance in health economics research. Both areas—as well as their intersection—are seeing increasing application in health economics. The workshop faculty are two of the top scholars whose own work focuses on the development and application of these methods in health economics contexts. Prof. Amanda Kowalski (Univ. of Michigan) will focus on CI while Prof. Amelia Haviland (Carnegie Mellon Univ.) will focus on ML. Each presentation will be approximately 45 minutes, allowing approximately 30 minutes for a Q&A session. The presentations will be as non-technical as the topics permit. The workshop’s learning objectives are to: enhance general understanding of CI and ML methods; understand what aspects of empirical health economics are most likely to benefit from furthering the application of CI and ML; appreciate what key CI and ML methods do and how they relate to more widely used econometric methods; and provide a sense of how to implement such methods in empirical practice.
