2022 ASHEcon Conference: Statement from the ASHEcon Board of Directors

ASHEcon is dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the U.S. Our mission requires our members to be able to safely participate in our events. Texas recently criminalized delivering or supporting gender-affirming medical care for adolescents. Another Texas law has raised concerns that, due to potential civil and criminal penalties faced by clinical providers, care for miscarriage could be compromised, a reality already reported by some patients. These policies mean that: 1) parents or caregivers of transgender youth who pursue gender-affirming care; and 2) individuals who are pregnant could be exposed to substantial risks to their legal, financial, physical, and mental health and well-being if they travel to attend the Austin conference in person.

We value all of our members, and we are very sorry that some members are unable to attend the Austin conference because of these (or other) policies. We are seeking virtual attendance or other options to reduce the lack of professional opportunities associated with forgone conference attendance.
