HCCI Updates Its Data Access Model for 2018

ASHEcon members may be familiar with the Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) and its large commercial claims dataset. In November, HCCI announced it is taking a major step to expand access to its data in order to enable more research on the trends in health care costs and spending among commercially-insured populations.

In light of the ongoing debate around policy options to improve the American health care system, HCCI believes that broadening the pool of researchers who can access HCCI data will expand the potential of the data to support a more informed conversation.

As of January 2018, HCCI’s new data access and pricing policy will open access to any researcher at any university in the United States. The new model is accompanied by a fully transparent pricing structure with a variety of options to meet the evolving needs of different users and projects. About HCCI

HCCI was founded in 2011 to promote and enable insights into the drivers of American health care costs. Research powered by HCCI data has resulted in hundreds of research products, presentations and media citations and HCCI’s data supports a national cost transparency website that provides regional estimates for hundreds of care bundles. However, prior to the November announcement, access to HCCI data was limited to a small body of researchers affiliated with selected academic institutions, government entities and non-profit organizations.

HCCI’s data contains billions of fully adjudicated claims from commercial insurance markets accounting for over one quarter of the under-65 employer-sponsored insurance population in the U.S. and millions of individuals with individual market coverage, and permits longitudinal patient-level analyses. HCCI’s data also includes claims information for more than five million Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries, providing researchers with one of the largest sources of MA data.
