Founding Chair, Department of Health Services Policy and Practice

School of Public Health and Health Professions
University at Buffalo

The School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP) of the University at Buffalo (UB) seeks candidates for Founding Chair of a Department of Health Services Policy and Practice (tentatively named). It is expected that an endowed chair will be announced in the near future to be linked to this position. The SPHHP is fully accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health. UB is the largest and most comprehensive research-intensive university in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is SUNY’s primary center for professional education and training. UB is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU).

The ultimate name of the department and its mission will be heavily influenced by the vision and interests of the Founding Chair. The Department will have two educational programs: an MPH concentration in health services administration (existing) and a PhD program in health services research (developing). Research emphasis of the Department will be broad, including interdisciplinary collaboration with participating faculty in other UB Schools (Management, Engineering, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Law, and the College of Arts and Sciences). The UB environment is conducive to strong informatics-driven research efforts, which are envisioned to be an important part of the research agenda. Opportunities exist for close relationships with the Institute for Healthcare Informatics (IHI), a state of the art HIPAA-compliant healthcare data center; the Population Health Observatory (PHO), a public health and outcomes research and informatics center; and the Patient Safety Research Center; all of which can serve as practical training environments and sources of research ideas and data for students and faculty who choose to do informatics-driven health services research.

The successful candidate must have a PhD, Dr. PH, MD, or equivalent and meet qualifications for appointment as Professor (preferred)or advanced Associate Professor. A distinguished record of extramural funding and publications in health services, health policy, health management research, or healthcare practice research is expected. Candidates with the vision and leadership skills to develop the Department’s research presence and its educational programs are sought. A demonstrated ability to foster effective, inter-disciplinary collaboration with diverse academic units and with health-related organizations in the private and public sectors is required. Strong commitment to diversity, to excellence in teaching and research, to student mentoring and faculty development, and to continuous improvement is essential. Department chairs also are expected to be strongly committed to Department involvement in community and public service.

This is a State-line tenure track faculty position. Additional information about the Department and this position is posted at http://sphhp.buffalo.edu/hspp-chair-search. Candidates must apply online at:
