The Department of Health Policy and Administration (HPA), in the College of Health and Human Development (HHD), invites applicants for the position of Department Head, ideally to start August 2017 although the start date is negotiable. We seek a leader with the vision and energy to promote excellence in the teaching, research, and outreach missions of an interdisciplinary department dedicated to developing leaders and generating new knowledge to improve health and health care. Qualifications include an exemplary record of scholarship and external funding, consistent with having developed a national reputation in one’s field of study, and a PhD in a discipline relevant to HPA including, but not limited to, health services research, population health, management, economics, sociology, demography, public policy or administration; and eligibility for appointment as a tenured full professor including individuals currently at the advanced associate level.
The successful candidate will have excellent speaking, writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills. The new department head will provide leadership and administrative oversight for all departmental activities, including residential and online undergraduate and graduate education; the opportunity to lead the recruitment, mentoring, and retention of an outstanding and diverse faculty as part of a college commitment to grow the size of the department; foster an extensive, innovative, influential, and well-funded portfolio of departmental research; and strengthen relationships with alumni, donors, community and industry partners, and academic peers. Additionally, the head will represent the department in College policymaking and communications as a member of the HHD Executive Committee. The HPA Department currently has 24 faculty members including 10 tenured or tenure track faculty, 9 administrative staff, and approximately 300 undergraduate majors, 37 residential and 60 online candidates for the Master of Health Administration degree, and 30 M.S./Ph.D. students. HPA research expenditures averaged $3.5 million in each of the last three years.
