The Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream faculty position in Health Economics, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1st, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

The successful candidate will have disciplinary depth in micro-economic theory with a focus on applied economic analysis as well as interest in working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary applied research environment. Applicants must demonstrate expertise and knowledge in issues related to health systems and health care with expertise in the application of micro-economic theory and econometric methods. The position is open to those with a substantive focus on health economics (e.g., health behaviours, individual and social determinants of health, industrial organization, labour, maternal/child health, inequalities in health, health equity, etc.)

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Economics or Econometrics, by the appointment date, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in applied research and in teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths ( Candidates must demonstrate an excellent research profile that is clearly aligned with the mission of the Institute ( and the emerging ability to significantly advance the field. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to collegial service and an interest in collaboration, including with those outside their discipline.

Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in research of the highest international caliber, as can be demonstrated by an innovative job market paper with a significant contribution to the literature, strong recommendations by referees of high standing, high quality working papers, publications in top ranked economics and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, accolades, and awards.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, a teaching dossier to include a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and sample syllabi, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, and student mentorship.

The successful applicant will contribute to the Institute’s graduate educational programs, notably the emphasis in Health Economics within the MSc/PhD concentration in Health Services Research, as well as other research and professional programs; the candidate may also have the opportunity to be involved with undergraduate teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to teach introductory and upper-level graduate courses in theory and methods, including courses such as Health Economics and Policy, Econometrics, and Microeconomic Theory applied to Health and Health Care to students having economics as well as other related disciplinary backgrounds.

Responsibilities will include research, teaching and supervision at the graduate level, and taking an active role in the life of the Institute. The new faculty member will be expected to: establish and maintain a strong, active, robust, independent, innovative, externally-funded research program at the highest international level; take an active role in teaching and mentoring students; collaborate with colleagues and other university departments, partners, and the community; and be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion.

The Canadian Centre for Health Economics (CCHE), located at IHPME, is a focal point for health economics research in Canada. The work of the Centre aims to provide solutions to issues in Canadian health research for those in the academic and policy realms. The Centre brings together student Fellows and Faculty Associates both domestic and international with a range of expertise in health economics and econometrics. CCHE disseminates research findings through its working papers, educational training courses and speaker series which are designed to serve as standard resources for health policy makers and academic health economists in Canada and abroad.

The Institute is located within the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH). This School was founded in 1927 and has grown to be the largest and most productive cluster of public health scholars in Canada. The Dalla Lana School of Public Health ( has an illustrious history that began in the 1920’s and continued with a recent renaissance beginning in 2008 (see synopsis at The most prominent School of Public Health in Canada, the DLSPH now has a roster of over 800 students, and greater than $27 million in annual research expenditures.
